Blood and Dirt

Session 1

Calan, Dale, Edrain, and Jacal were brought into a meeting with Mentor Reed, Mentor Stoneson and General Grey. The General told them of reports of defiling magic being used in the Gold Mountains but couldn’t tell exactly how that knowledge was acquired. Mentor Stoneson stressed that there might be spies in the city and it was important that they not know they were being investigated. A sack of ceramic gold coins was given to equip the group and a true gold coin was given to each of the investigators. Mentor Reed stressed that while the safety of the community was important she said getting information was also valuable to the library.

The investigators decided to pace themselves on their way to investigate. On the side of the road on the first day they came across a riderless horse. Calan found a Library Communique that reported more incidents of defiling magic. Dale took a moment to commune with the horse and found out that the rider had fallen victim to a Gith attack. Moments later the group also became party to a Gith attack. (Maybe the same Gith.) After gutting and delimbing their attackers the party moved on.

While still on the road they came across a group of polite, attentive and armed merchants. The merchants answered some questions, shared their ice and made a solemn promise to deliver the communique to Mentor Reed. Later that night Calan woke those asleep as the merchants started an ambush. Although the group fought bravely they were outnumbered, cut down, kicked in the head and left for dead. They weren’t quite dead yet. A week of slowly pulling themselves back together and they were back on the hunt or at least back on the slow turnip truck back to Pine Library. Mentor Reed took their information and put them back on the case. Some sleuthing put them in the direction of a wine seller. After getting some superb customer service from the merchant and one positive i.d. from the guard the group decided to pull rank and search the rest of the building.

They met some resistance on the stairs down to the cellar. A guard was knocked out, healed and put to the question. The other guards showed up and skipped out trying to barricade themselves
away. The door was opened with Dale’s psychic energy manipulation and after cutting, burning and blasting their way though the intruders in the basement the team was left with a large black serpentine creature whose scales they couldn’t puncture. After contemplating whether or not it would be a good idea to climb down the creature’s throat so they could stab it from the inside they were interrupted by the city guard, who quarantined the area and escorted the mercenaries out.
